What is Toluna?
Let’s delve into Toluna’s identity and its range of services.
While it was originally recognized simply as Toluna, a survey website, it now operates under the official name Toluna Influencers as part of the Toluna Group. However, because many long-time users still refer to it as Toluna, we’ll stick with that name in this review.
Toluna provides users with the chance to engage in surveys from various brands and market research firms. This allows individuals to express their opinions and have an impact on the development of the products and services they appreciate.
How Does Toluna Work?
Toluna offers a diverse selection of surveys that enable users to accumulate points, which can be exchanged for PayPal cash or gift cards from various retailers. As a bonus, Toluna provides 200 points just for attempting surveys, although not all members may qualify for all surveys at specific times.
In addition to participating in Toluna surveys, members can accrue points by reviewing products, engaging in sponsored mini-polls, referring friends, and winning contests and sweepstakes.
One standout aspect of Toluna is the effortless and straightforward account creation process. What sets it apart is that it rewards you with an extra 500 points, which imparts a sense of achievement, even though this equates to only $0.17. You might not fully realize this until you’ve entered the members’ area.
This enticed me to start taking surveys promptly. While some quick and straightforward surveys lacked estimated completion times, I was particularly drawn to the “high-paying” surveys. For instance, the offer of 2,500 points for a 35-minute survey seemed exceptionally appealing compared to other paid survey platforms I’ve been a part of. It began to dawn on me that I had stumbled upon a legitimate way to earn money through surveys.
The main method to accumulate points on the platform is through Toluna’s Survey Center. Upon activating my account, I was required to complete a series of profile surveys. These profile surveys consist of brief demographic questionnaires, and Toluna uses them to match you with relevant surveys.
There are a total of 13 profile questionnaires, and it took me approximately 20 minutes to complete all of them. For each survey, I received 100 points, adding up to a total of 1,300 points. It’s worth noting that these profile surveys translate to a payment of 37 cents, considering that 3,500 Toluna points equal $1.
Following the completion of my profile surveys, I headed to the Survey Center to begin participating in longer surveys. To get started, you can either click the “Start Survey” button located at the top of the page, which directs you to a randomly selected survey, or you can explore the available survey options.
I consistently found a diverse range of surveys to choose from. There were instances when the survey center temporarily exhausted its available opportunities, but this typically occurred after I had successfully completed multiple surveys.
Each survey is accompanied by a brief description that includes information about its general topic, the estimated completion time, and the number of points you can earn by participating.
I engaged in surveys covering a wide range of topics, spanning digital subscriptions, grocery shopping, travel, beauty products, and more. I noticed that the majority of these surveys involved reviewing concepts and marketing materials for products and services that were still in development.
The surveys varied in terms of difficulty. While most of them included open-ended or straightforward demographic questions, others required me to complete intricate charts. Additionally, some questionnaires were somewhat repetitive in nature.
These surveys were administered through various methods, with some hosted directly on the Toluna platform and others conducted by external survey firms and then aggregated by Toluna. Although there were occasional inconsistencies, I found that, on the whole, the survey descriptions provided were reasonably accurate.
For instance, there were occasional discrepancies between the promised reward amount and the actual cash I received. This usually occurred because I was redirected to a different survey than the one I initially started, leading to the variance. Additionally, I noticed that the surveys often took slightly less time to complete than the stated duration.
As I spent more time using Toluna, I found that disqualifications occurred less frequently. Typically, when I was disqualified, it happened after just one or two questions, which didn’t waste much of my time. However, there were occasions when, after investing more than five minutes in answering questions, I was informed that I wasn’t a suitable fit for the survey or that it had reached its capacity.
Toluna offers a mobile app that allows members to take surveys on the go. However, it’s important to note that the community features available on the website are not accessible through the mobile app, which is limited to survey participation. Interestingly, I observed that when I used the mobile app instead of a computer to take surveys, I experienced disqualifications more frequently.
How Much Money Can You Make?
Earning a payout or reward on Toluna is not particularly challenging, although the speed at which you achieve it will naturally vary depending on factors such as survey frequency, your location, and your engagement with other point-earning methods on the platform.
From my own experience, I’ve found that completing a survey that awards 4,000 points typically takes between 10 to 15 minutes, based on my location. This is quite reasonable for a survey site. Moreover, the surveys often delve into intriguing topics, providing an excellent opportunity to express your opinions.
Toluna offers another avenue for earning points by allowing you to create your own content on the platform. This includes crafting polls and questions. If you can generate content that resonates and garners rewards, it can be a relatively swift way to supplement your income.
It’s important to note that you won’t know the exact reward until you’ve completed the task. If you opt for this method, be sure to create content that captivates your audience, as it can earn you anywhere from 100 to 1,000 points.
Another avenue for earning additional points is by inviting friends to join Toluna Influencers. After logging in, you’ll find buttons below your username that allow you to email or share a link with friends on social media. However, it’s worth mentioning that this isn’t the most efficient way to accumulate points, as you’ll only receive 500 points, roughly equivalent to 15 cents, for each friend who signs up.
In summary, Toluna Influencers can certainly assist you in generating some extra income to cover bills, indulge in a bit of luxury, or purchase something special for a loved one.
It’s important to remember that, much like any other survey website, you shouldn’t base your decision to join solely on an hourly pay calculation.
Even Toluna acknowledges that participating in surveys won’t lead to substantial financial success or a full-time online income. Nevertheless, it serves as an excellent and straightforward method to earn some additional income while expressing your viewpoint.
Is Toluna a Scam?
At the very least, consider reading this section of the review if you’re short on time.
In the initial stages, Toluna may seem quite enticing, largely due to its user-friendly interface and the promise of substantial reward points for relatively short and simple surveys.
However, a significant drawback becomes evident when you visit their Rewards Center for the first time: their point-to-redemption ratio is 30 times less favorable compared to many of their competitors. To put it in perspective, a survey network like Ipsos i-Say only requires 100 points for a $1 redemption, whereas Toluna demands 3,000 points for the same.
Throughout my examination of various paid survey sites, I consistently encountered disappointing time-to-earnings ratios, usually averaging around $1 to $2 per hour. Due to Toluna’s exceptionally high rewards redemption ratio, even though it might feel like you’re accumulating points at a faster pace, you’re actually doing so at a slower rate, resulting in an even lower hourly wage.
Toluna stands out as the lowest-paying survey site I’ve reviewed, and when combined with the other issues detailed in the review below, I cannot recommend Toluna in any way. Exploring part-time job opportunities or perhaps starting your own online part-time business would likely yield significantly higher earnings.
Is Toluna Worth It?
Toluna is a reliable and user-friendly survey platform known for its high-quality standards. It can provide a practical means for you to earn extra income during your free time, offering various opportunities to earn cash rewards, access online discounts, and even win prizes.
However, it’s essential to note that Toluna should not be seen as a replacement for your primary source of income. It can be a worthwhile option if you have some spare hours to dedicate to it. Additionally, for students looking to cover expenses like a cup of coffee or a Netflix subscription, the platform can serve as a suitable choice.
Toluna’s Community Section
In addition to surveys, Toluna provides limited opportunities to earn points through its “Community” section. Each aspect of the Community feature was thoroughly evaluated to determine its value. It was generally observed that the Community section didn’t offer substantial rewards, so focusing on surveys proved to be a more worthwhile endeavor.
The Community section is divided into five parts:
- Games: This section features two games that allow you to earn additional points. One is a simple scratch-off game that you can play once daily, while the other is a photo booth where you can take and share pictures.
- Polls: Here, you can participate in polls from Toluna and the public. Responding to Toluna surveys can earn you points, and you can also view the poll results to see how the general public voted.
- Topics: Articles posted by the Toluna team and other users are available in this section for you to read. You can share your opinions in response to these articles, but contributing to this section does not provide bonus points.
- Thumb It: In this section, users can create posts resembling those on social media, with photos and text. Community members can give these posts a “thumbs up” to show support. However, participating in this section does not yield extra credit, similar to the Topics section.
- VS Battle: Users can view community results and choose between two options in this section, such as “Burger King and McDonald’s face off.” Voting in VS Battles does not result in additional points.
Overall, the Community section left me with the impression of being somewhat cumbersome and outdated. Navigating through it proved to be a bit of a challenge, as it took some time to discern the precise purpose of each section. Nevertheless, it seemed that other community members were regularly utilizing these features.
Furthermore, I had reservations about the potential for this section to yield a substantial number of points. I only earned bonus points in the Polls section, and even there, the earning potential was relatively modest. User-generated polls did not offer any rewards, whereas Toluna-sponsored polls provided a mere 15 points per poll (equivalent to roughly half a cent). Additionally, it appeared that Toluna only published new polls every few months or so.
Toluna is a platform that allows you to earn some additional income during your free time, but it should not be viewed as a substitute for a full-time job or even a more conventional side gig.
In our assessment, we found that the hourly payout was slightly higher than the average when compared to other paid survey websites. Furthermore, the quality of the available surveys remained consistently high.
How Long Does It Take to Pay You?
When Toluna users request a withdrawal, it generally takes about three weeks for them to receive their payment. Nonetheless, there have been complaints from some users about extended delays in processing PayPal transfers.
How Much Are Their Points Worth?
While 3,000 Toluna points are equivalent to $1, there are occasional opportunities to get more value from your points when redeeming them for gift cards and vouchers.
How Much Do They Pay Per Survey?
According to their official website, each survey promises a payout ranging from 15,000 to 50,000 Toluna points. However, our thorough testing revealed that these claims are significantly inflated. In reality, the majority of surveys pay out between 1,500 and 2,000 points, with a few exceptions reaching up to 15,000 points.
